Google Ads Optimization for a Driving School: +43.6% Real Students on a Cut Budget

43.6% more enrolled students, CAC cut by more than half

Client & Context

A local driving school operating a network of physical classroom branches alongside a distance-learning track. The educational product is built around flexibility: students can attend additional lectures from specialist instructors, and can freely change their training vehicle or instructor mid-course — a real service differentiator in a commoditized category.

The Challenge

At the point of engagement, the client's central challenge was intensive scaling: building a predictable marketing channel to bring in more students, while strictly controlling the maximum acceptable cost of acquisition. This is a mature local-services category where cheap, low-intent leads are easy to generate and largely worthless — the real task was raising lead quality, not just lead volume.

A Year-Long, Three-Phase Rebuild

Phase 1 (January–February): Traffic cleanup and relevance

The team completely disabled broad-match keyword campaigns, redirecting the entire budget toward precise, commercial-intent search terms to capture 100% of the available reach on genuinely relevant queries. A thorough cleanup of search terms followed, removing ineffective and irrelevant keywords, which immediately lifted account-level conversion rate. Ad copy was rewritten across the board with stronger, more explicit calls-to-action, directly improving click-through rate. The budget freed up by cutting waste was redirected to the strongest-performing campaigns.

Phase 2 (March–April): Search over automation

The team deliberately raised bids on priority search campaigns to lock in top positions in the hottest auctions. In parallel, spend on Performance Max was intentionally scaled back in favor of classic Search — a strategic call to keep full control over actual user intent and eliminate the spam-conversion and bot-traffic risk that automated placement types can introduce.

Phase 3 (second half of the year): Defending market position

Even as new competitors entered the auction and pushed average CPC upward, the team held stable reach through the quality of the underlying setup. The cost increase didn't dilute the budget — it converted into meaningfully higher overall efficiency and cleaner leads, because the traffic quality work from Phases 1–2 was already in place.

Hypotheses Tested

Old website version for Search traffic

At the client's request, based on past results, the team tested running search campaigns against the client's previous website version. In practice, the old platform's usability and interface scores badly underperformed the new site, leading to low conversion-to-goal rates and a sharply higher cost per result. This direction was fully stopped, and all traffic was consolidated onto the new, higher-converting site.

Performance Max audience signals

Within Performance Max, the team tested different audience interest signals. Users who regularly attend various offline events showed the strongest initial performance. However, this audience burned out quickly given the limited capacity of the local market, and relaunching with similar targeting and refreshed creative didn't restore results. The team pivoted the algorithm toward broader behavioral signals, which laid the groundwork for the later, controlled shift of budget into Search.

Google Ads campaign table for 1 Jan – 31 Dec 2024 compared with the previous year, interface in Ukrainian. Highlighted account totals: CTR 5.47%, 9,059.31 conversions, 777,689.28 UAH cost, 85.84 UAH cost per conversion and a 0.75% conversion rate. Campaign names are blurred.

The Real Result: Students, Not Leads

Raw lead count actually fell (6,951 → 4,963) — the strategy deliberately traded volume for quality. The metric that mattered to the business — real enrolled students, i.e. final conversions rather than raw leads — rose 43.6%, and the cost of acquiring one actual student fell by more than half. CPC rose 18.3% as the account moved into hotter, more competitive auctions chasing "hot" semantics, but that cost increase was fully justified: CTR more than doubled (2%→5.47%) and conversion rate exactly doubled (0.37%→0.75%), meaning each invested unit of currency produced dramatically more result than before.

The broader lesson: a competent reading of algorithmic scaling — shifting from volume to intent, from automation back to controllable Search when quality is at risk — can deliver multiplied sales growth even under a tightened or flat budget.
